A cosy winter evening routine: small luxuries for staying in
Draw the curtains, find a comfortable corner and make room for something you enjoy. Simple ideas for a lovelier winter evening.

By the time you have finished work, sorted dinner and dealt with the things that could not wait, a winter evening can disappear rather quickly. Sometimes you finally sit down and realise you are still mentally working through tomorrow’s list.
A cosy evening routine can be as simple as making that last part of the day a little more enjoyable. There is no need for an immaculate house or two spare hours. Start with the time you have, a comfortable corner and a few things you are looking forward to.
Make a little space for yourself
You do not have to tidy the whole house before you are allowed to enjoy it. Clear the cups from the side table, fold the blanket and move the things that are in the way of your favourite seat. Give yourself somewhere to put a drink without balancing it on yesterday’s post.
Choose a stopping point for the practical jobs. There will nearly always be another one available, so it helps to decide which can wait until tomorrow. Even a small patch of order can make it easier to settle into the room.
Put the lamps on and find something comfortable
Draw the curtains, switch on a lamp and bring your favourite throw within reach. Softer light and familiar textures can change how a room feels without buying a single new cushion. On an especially grey evening, the pleasure might simply be getting into comfortable clothes a little earlier.
Think about sound as well. You might want music, a favourite programme or a bit of peace after a noisy day. The right choice is whichever makes this part of the evening enjoyable for you.
Choose a scent for the evening
If home fragrance is part of your routine, choose one scent and give it a little space. Sweetness and spice can be a lovely fit for winter, while fresher scents may feel more like you. There is no need to change your favourite just because the weather has.
For a warmer direction, explore our Myrrh & Tonka Wax Melts or read our seasonal scent ideas. If you use a candle, choose an evening when you can follow its recommended burn time and stay with it. Our candle care guide covers the practical details.
Leave room for something you actually enjoy
This is the part that can easily get lost. You make a lovely space, sit down, then spend the next hour scrolling through things you were not especially interested in. If that sounds familiar, put something you would rather do within easy reach before you sit down.
It could be a book, a puzzle, a bit of knitting or a film you have been meaning to watch. If you are spending the evening with someone else, making a drink and having a proper catch-up can be enough. Your evening does not need to be productive to be well spent.
Make the everyday routine feel a little more considered
Washing your hands and getting ready for bed are things you were going to do anyway. A soap you enjoy using and a scented lotion can make those familiar moments feel a little nicer, without adding a complicated new routine.
Our Rock Salt & Driftwood Soap brings a fresh, coastal fragrance to washing. If you prefer something richer for your lotion, take a look at Frankincense & Myrrh. Choose according to your own preferences and the product instructions, rather than feeling you need every scent to match.
Finish the evening before you get too sleepy
Before leaving the room or settling down to sleep, fully extinguish any candles or tealights and turn off your wax warmer. Keep candles away from throws, curtains and other furnishings throughout use, and allow hot wax to cool before handling anything.
If you are already tired enough to doze off on the sofa, enjoy the lamps and blanket without lighting a candle. You can keep that particular pleasure for an evening when you will be awake to enjoy it.
Keep the parts you look forward to
A routine is easier to return to when it fits your life. On a busy night, yours might be clean hands, a favourite lotion and ten minutes with a book. At the weekend, there may be time for a slower evening with fragrance, music and something lovely to eat.
